Da Jia Hao!I am so honored to be in front of you today. It is such a wonderful day. I have learned so much about what you have been doing in the daily schooling and I’m very impressed.
Our society is changing very fast. Our society is changing expansionary, which means our society is going faster everyday than the day before. Which will be valued in the future will be different from yesterday. So in that uncertain future, how to prepare our youth to lead tomorrow? That is a question many people are trying to answer to. The right answer is not clear. What is clear is what sort of skill set, behavior, ethic and attitude is required to have a successful future. Now some of the skills you are learning from behavior point of view, about discipline, ethic, transparency and efficiency, all of those skill set will be required in the future. What also being required is collaboration, your ability to work together, ability to communicate, ability to work with computers, ability to bring innovation. Those skill sets are more important than an explicit skill set functionally you may acquire. That means you have to be ready for new skills to learn in future. Unless you have the right attitude and behavior foundation, you won’t be able to create a bright future. My suggestions to you would be learn the best you can from your experience in this school. This is giving you a great foundation to start your career in the real world.
Second, pay attention to your computer skills. In the future, computer skills will be required no matter what you do. Computer and software especially are changing the society. Society will be even more dependent on software to be functioning properly. Your computer skills will matter a lot.
Third, I would say learn every day. I think given the future’s uncertainty, even if you are working, you have to think about how you can learn every day. And learning doesn’t always come through the books or through teachers. Every day how you do your job, how well you do your job, and how you interact with others gives you advice. You have to think about how you can continue to learn. You can learn through reading, you can learn through others, you can also learn by doing your job better every day to be an expert.
Forth, play to win. I think I see even at my work and every place where some people are so passionate about what they do. They work late in the game so they can win. Some people want to play the game so they don’t lose. It’s a matter of attitude, but it makes a huge difference. In fact, you have almost 50% better chance of success if you play to win than someone who plays to not lose. So mind your attitude, keep your attitude up. If you have the attitude of doing your best, performing at higher levels today than yesterday, you will succeed better and faster.
Last but not least, work is work, but beyond that you have to be a good citizen of your country and society. Well I can tell you all about success. You have great philosophical background here in China to live by. If you follow some of the philosophical experts in the Chinese society, be a good citizen, be a good contributor to the society development, not only the society will develop, but you as a person will develop and fulfill your full potential, that I am sure of.
With that I just wanna give you a quick introduction. I think you have seen my bio. I live in Shanghai, but I run Dell’s business in Asia Pacific and Japan, which means I have to travel a lot. I travel to Japan, Australia, India, Southeast Asia, and the US every other month, which means I’m away from home. I have two kids, one is ten and one is six. My interaction with them is pretty much through technology. We do video conference everyday or every other day. Every time I travel, when I come back I have to tell them what I did. I also send them pictures when I’m on the road. So they know what I am doing today. It’s like a private social networking within the family. They get to see everyday what I’m been up to. Like I said, I hope you know me like a person as well, not just someone who is in a business. I want you to know that success is possible. I was born in India and grew up there as well, and now I lead a global business. So it is possible for you all to achieve your full potential but keep in mind what I told you about success. Please remember that because they will come handy when you are thinking about your future.
Question 1: Good afternoon Mr. Midha! My name is Natalie. What is the new technology of Dell in the future?
Amit Midha: The world is changing where technologically more powerful computers are needed to support the backbone of Internet. To have more videos, more pictures, more communication, computers have to be very very powerful now to run the Internet. On the other hand, the technology goes with you wherever you go. Today it is a phone, tomorrow it could be a watch or just a pin. This could be everything I need to do everything you do with your phone today. So on one hand technology is becoming smaller, easier, cheaper to go with you wherever you go, on the other hand, the back-end computers have to be more powerful than ever to support so much more interaction that is happening.
Let me give you an example. Imagine a computer room in the size of this area, this auditorium, there are 50-60 refrigerator-size computers sitting and running the Internet engagement of a company. Today it can be done with only 1 refrigerator-size computer. You can see the computers are becoming more powerful in smaller space. And that’s what Dell is doing. Dell’s customers are needing the density, the power, the cooling, as well as the space Internet, computers take.
You can see that over time, these 50-60 big refrigerator-size computers can be replaced by one. It has happened over 9 years. 9 years back, if you built a big data center like this, you don’t need it anymore. You can run it from the closet; you don’t even need air-conditioning anymore. Data center runs up to 36 degrees Celsius. That’s the kind of big progress Dell is driving in. The second one is how you can make smaller computers. We recently launched a tablet at 6mm. It has 2k display, a 3D camera, and it has the full moments processing, which means you have a very small computer with you that can take 3D pictures. It can even take your facial scans, which I can go back and print it at my home, and I can have the exact faces of you printed on my 3D computer. That’s what can be done with a very small tablet. That’s what the second technology Dell is driving.
Question 2: Good afternoon sir, my name is Fay. What is your biggest achievement so far in life?
Amit Midha: when I got my first job, I thought my biggest achievement was getting a job. At that time, I thought that was pretty good. I got a good job, right? Then I must get married and I should have children. Well I have children now and they are healthy and happy. And that was the biggest achievement at that time. But as time went on, you don’t measure your success in terms of materials, you see what influence you have had on the society, what difference you have made in people around you. And that’s how you measure your success. I know it’s hard to measure, because you can’t count. But how you live your life, how you make difference in others’ life, start with somewhere and add more. So I would say, I have been able to build a business in Asia Pacific, in the meantime I have lived my life in ways that I don’t have to compromise, and I have been able to make differences for others. That’s my answer.
Question 3: Good afternoon sir, my name is Chasel. How can I improve my computer skills?
Amit Midha: Well, how do you improve skill set in anything? Typically you learn first, that means stay here. Second, you keep doing it, so it becomes a muscle memory, that means it stays with you wherever. Third, you evolve so you can teach others. That’s how you learn, that how the skills improve. There’s no shortcut either with computers. You have to study hard, to learn intellectually, that means it sits in your mind. Second you have to practice and do more work, so it sits in your muscle. That means when you drive you don’t have to think, you drive without thinking, it sits in your body everywhere. Third, it sits in your heart, when you actually teach others and can tell others why it is so and how they can do better. So it moves from mind to muscle to heart. You wanna improve your computer skill set? Start with mind, learn as much as you can. Then practice, it goes to your muscle. Then finally it sits in your heart, that’s when you become a better teacher than the teacher taught you.
